“Live With Diabetes”
Welcome. The goal, and the reason for this site, is to help educate you, either as a parent, a patient, or even a friend, on the care and control of Type 1 diabetes, also known as Juvenile diabetes. In the US alone, over 13,000 children are diagnosed with this life changing disease. That translates to 35 new cases a day or over 1 child every hour who will experience the life altering effect of Type 1 diabetes.
As a former paramedic, I have dealt with countless diabetic patients and their families over 19 years. I see the effects on the people with diabetes, but also the stress and anxiety of their friends, caregivers, and loved ones during a diabetic emergency.
While there is no cure for diabetes, we have come a long way in the management of the disease thanks to the advances in technology such as insulin pumps and glucose monitoring meters. We still have a long way to go, but being well educated on the disease process, as well as the signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetic problems, can reduce the frequency and severity of diabetic illnesses.
Think of this as your resource for information to use for yourself and share with others. Your comments are encouraged, as are your thoughts, your stories, your successes (and failures) and even your recipes.
As your moderator, I hope I can live up to your expectations and help you learn how to “Live with Diabetes”.
